O Grupo Familiar do Espiritismo foi fundado pelo jornalista baiano Luiz Olímpio Teles de Menezes em Salvador, em 17 de setembro de 1865, tendo sido reconhecido como o primeiro e legítimo agrupamento de espíritas no País.

De acordo com Edinólia Pinto Peixinho, pesquisadora, jornalista e coordenadora do Projeto Memórias, ligado à Federação Espírita do Estado da Bahia (FEEB), o soteropolitano Luiz Olímpio nasceu a 26 de julho de 1825 e foi responsável também pelo surgimento do primeiro periódico espírita brasileiro, “Echo d’Além Túmulo”, em julho de 1869.
