Is OpenAI scrapping GPT-5? Slide suggests a move away from numbers

OpenAI is rumored to be dropping GPT-5 soon here’s what we know about the next-gen model

what is gpt5

Some enterprise customers have recently received demos of the latest model and its related enhancements to the ChatGPT tool, another person familiar with the process said. These people, whose identities Business Insider has confirmed, asked to remain anonymous so they could speak freely. The new version of the large language model is expected to be much more capable compared to the GPT-4 model that was introduced last year.

what is gpt5

GPT-4 brought a few notable upgrades over previous language models in the GPT family, particularly in terms of logical reasoning. And while it still doesn’t know about events post-2021, GPT-4 has broader general knowledge and knows a lot more about the world around us. OpenAI also said the model can handle up to 25,000 words of text, allowing you to cross-examine or analyze long documents.

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D launches today!

Built on Google’s own transformer architecture, this family of multimodal AI models can both understand and generate text, images, audio, videos, and code. First released in March, 2o23, Gemini is available in 46 languages and in 239 countries and territories. One of its big advantages is that Gemini can generate images for free, while you’ll have to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus in OpenAI’s ecosystem. Project Strawberry was the code name for OpenAI’s latest family of “reasoning” models, which reportedly can use logic similarly to humans.

Heller’s biggest hope for GPT-5 is that it’ll be able to “take more agentic actions”; in other words, complete tasks that involve multiple complex steps without losing its way. This could include reading a legal fling, consulting the relevant statute, cross-referencing the case law, comparing it with the evidence, and then formulating a question for a deposition. OpenAI has been hard at work on its latest model, hoping it’ll represent the kind of step-change paradigm shift that captured the popular imagination with the release of ChatGPT back in 2022. This is not to dismiss fears about AI safety or ignore the fact that these systems are rapidly improving and not fully under our control.

In other words, while actual training hasn’t started, work on the model could be underway. However, while speaking at an MIT event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared to have squashed these predictions. Already, various sources ChatGPT have predicted that GPT-5 is currently undergoing training, with an anticipated release window set for early 2024. Essay writing for students is one of the most obvious examples of where ChatGPT could become a problem.

While Altman did not share technical details, OpenAI seems to be in the preparatory phase of GPT-5 development. Altman implied that his company has not started training the model, so this early phase could involve establishing the training methodology, organizing annotators, and, most crucially, curating the dataset. The topic of discussion on the podcast, which you can find the full video of below, is Saleforce’s Agentforce AI. It’s a competitor to Copilot that offers an AI assistant targeted at increasing productivity in businesses. Instead of one AI to rule them all, Salesforce offers agents targeted at different applications. There’s an agent built for customer service, another built for retail, and even another built to dig through analytics.

Tools like Auto-GPT give us a peek into the future when AGI has realized. Auto-GPT is an open-source tool initially released on GPT-3.5 and later updated to GPT-4, capable of performing tasks automatically with minimal human input. In comparison, GPT-4 has been trained with a broader set of data, which still dates back to September 2021. OpenAI noted subtle differences between GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 in casual conversations. GPT-4 also emerged more proficient in a multitude of tests, including Unform Bar Exam, LSAT, AP Calculus, etc. In addition, it outperformed GPT-3.5 machine learning benchmark tests in not just English but 23 other languages.

GPT-5: 4 New Features We Want to See

On the rare occasion he’s not writing, you’ll find him spending time with his son, or working hard at the gym. “I am excited about it being smarter,” said Altman in his interview with Fridman. However, what we don’t know is whether they utilized the new exaFLOP GPU platforms from Nvidia in training GPT-5. what is gpt5 A relatively small cluster of the Blackwell chips in a data centre could train a trillion parameter model in days rather than weeks or months. The report from Business Insider suggests they’ve moved beyond training and on to “red teaming”, especially if they are offering demos to third-party companies.

The current-gen GPT-4 model already offers speech and image functionality, so video is the next logical step. The company also showed off a text-to-video AI tool called Sora in the following weeks. For context, OpenAI announced the GPT-4 language model after just a few months of ChatGPT’s release in late 2022. GPT-4 was the most significant updates to the chatbot as it introduced a host of new features and under-the-hood improvements.

what is gpt5

Altman says that this new generation of the lauded language model that powers ChatGPT will be “fully multimodal with speech, image, code, and video support.” ChatGPT is easily the best-known generative AI chatbot in the world, but it offers different experiences depending on whether or not you pay for a premium LLM. The free ChatGPT runs on the GPT-3.5 model, while ChatGPT Plus and enterprise subscriptions have access to GPT-4. There’s even talk about GPT-4.5 coming out soon, with many people expecting OpenAI to launch a GPT-5 upgrade later this year.

GPT-5 might arrive this summer as a “materially better” update to ChatGPT

In the years since, the system has undergone a number of iterative advancements with the current version of ChatGPT using the GPT-4 model family. GPT-3 was first launched in 2020, GPT-2 released the year prior to that, though neither were used in the public-facing ChatGPT system. 2023 has witnessed a massive uptick in the buzzword “AI,” with companies flexing their muscles and implementing tools that seek simple text prompts from users and perform something incredible instantly. You can foun additiona information about ai customer service and artificial intelligence and NLP. At the center of this clamor lies ChatGPT, the popular chat-based AI tool capable of human-like conversations. For this, the company has been seeking more data to train its models and even recently called for private data sets.

They can generate general purpose text, for chatbots, and perform language processing tasks such as classifying concepts, analysing data and translating text. Even though OpenAI released GPT-4 mere months after ChatGPT, we know that it took over two years to train, develop, and test. If GPT-5 follows a similar schedule, we may have to wait until late 2024 or early 2025. OpenAI has reportedly demoed early versions of GPT-5 to select enterprise users, indicating a mid-2024 release date for the new language model. The testers reportedly found that ChatGPT-5 delivered higher-quality responses than its predecessor.

Our mission is to help you identify the trends that will have the biggest impact on the future. Altman and OpenAI want our attention and right now, they’ve got it – and it sounds like they’re cooking up something very special to keep it. It’s, of course, possible that OpenAI is quietly testing a new version of its LLM. Google released its GPT rival Gemini earlier this month, putting pressure on OpenAI to respond.

The Information has learned that the hot AI startup has already demoed Strawberry to US national security officials. The report further says that Strawberry was able to solve the New York Times “Connections” word puzzle in an internal demo. Some users have also reported a sudden increase in the performance of ChatGPT after weeks of complaints that suggested it had been dumbed down or gotten lazy. Its initial response said the model was “ChatGPT with GPT-4 architecture.” But after further prompting, it said, “This model is specifically named gpt-4.5-turbo.”

what is gpt5

We’ve seen other people reach the same conclusion after further testing, saying that the new mystery chatbot doesn’t seem to represent a large capability leap beyond GPT-4. “Gpt2-chatbot is good. really good,” wrote HyperWrite CEO Matt Shumer on X. Early reports of the model first appeared on 4chan, then spread to social media platforms like X, with hype following not far behind. “Not only does it seem to show incredible reasoning, but it also gets notoriously challenging AI questions right with a much more impressive tone,” wrote AI developer Pietro Schirano on X. Soon, threads on Reddit popped up claiming that the new model had amazing abilities that beat every other LLM on the Arena.

“Furthermore, enhanced LLMs could streamline operations such as contract analysis, risk assessment and more by quickly processing and analyzing large volumes of text-based data with a high degree of accuracy,” he added. SearchGPT relies on GPT-4 at the moment, but it’s safe to assume that GPT-5 will take on that underlying role in the future. A big stumble by the latter would almost certainly hurt the former’s chances of competing with one of the most widely used tools on the web. With investors pressing tech companies on their AI projects’ paths to profitability, OpenAI could quickly face pressure if GPT-5 can’t attract more customers. But others don’t see the newest model making as big a step as its predecessor. One potential customer told Darius the gap between GPT-4 and GPT-5 will be more like going from undergrad to a PhD program.

These models are strictly for testing and won’t be listed on the leaderboard until they go public. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a recent interview that he didn’t know when GPT-5 will be released. The company has other exciting announcements to make, and we’ve seen some of them already. Considering how it renders machines capable of making their own decisions, AGI is seen as a threat to humanity, echoed in a blog written by Sam Altman in February 2023. In the blog, Altman weighs AGI’s potential benefits while citing the risk of “grievous harm to the world.” The OpenAI CEO also calls on global conventions about governing, distributing benefits of, and sharing access to AI. Despite these, GPT-4 exhibits various biases, but OpenAI says it is improving existing systems to reflect common human values and learn from human input and feedback.

However, this is an essential minimum requirement of GPT-5 to remain competitive in todays AI space, and it’s hard to imagine OpenAI isn’t keenly aware of that. GPT-5 will offer improved language understanding, generate more accurate and human-like responses, and handle complex queries better than previous versions. ChatGPT-5 is likely to integrate more advanced multimodal capabilities, enabling it to process and generate not just text but also images, audio, and possibly video. With 117 million parameters, it introduced the concept of a transformer-based language model pre-trained on a large corpus of text. This pre-training allowed the model to understand and generate text with surprising fluency. I have been told that gpt5 is scheduled to complete training this december and that openai expects it to achieve agi.which means we will all hotly debate as to whether it actually achieves agi.which means it will.

  • While many expect Sam Altman’s non-profit to release GPT-5 in 2024, some analysts are now asserting that those expectations remain far-fetched, especially given the scale of resources required.
  • It remains to be seen how these AI models counter that and fetch only reliable results while also being quick.
  • 2023 has witnessed a massive uptick in the buzzword “AI,” with companies flexing their muscles and implementing tools that seek simple text prompts from users and perform something incredible instantly.
  • It’s been a few months since the release of ChatGPT-4o, the most capable version of ChatGPT yet.
  • This is apparently not the first time an unreleased model has been in the LMSYS arena.

The o1-preview model is designed to handle challenging tasks by dedicating more time to thinking and refining its responses, similar to how a person would approach a complex problem. Microsoft has shifted its entire business model around the use of AI with Copilot running front and center in Windows and various applications. So you can see how the investment will benefit the company’s huge move into this field.

So, consider this a strong rumor, but this is the first time we’ve seen a potential release date for GPT-5 from a reputable source. Also, we now know that GPT-5 is reportedly complete enough to undergo testing, which means its major training run is likely complete. OpenAI launched GPT-4 in March 2023 as an upgrade to its most major predecessor, GPT-3, which emerged in 2020 (with GPT-3.5 arriving in late 2022). The potential release of GPT-5 by OpenAI could mark a pivotal moment in the development of AI technologies, or it could just be another minor upgrade. With expectations of major advancements, experts across various sectors are evaluating how this next-generation model could impact industries from healthcare to finance.

Altman has previously said that GPT-5 will be a big improvement over any previous generation model. This will include video functionality — as in the ability to understand the content of videos — and significantly improved reasoning. Red teaming is where the model is put to extremes and tested for safety issues.

Two sources familiar with the matter told Business Insider that GPT-5 could be released this summer. In preparation for its launch, some businesses have reportedly experimented with a demo version to test its improved functionalities. Altman did take on some of the biggest controversies around AI, particularly content licensing. He took the opportunity to brag about OpenAI’s approach, which involves agreements with publishers to license news content for ChatGPT in exchange for training data for the models. He contrasted this approach with that of companies like Google, which claims that AI-driven traffic benefits publishers – a claim he and many others view with skepticism. Altman likened the current state of AI technology to the early days of the iPhone, suggesting that while today’s models are useful, they are still in the nascent stages of their potential.

The safety testing has no specific timeframe for completion, so the process could potentially delay the release date. While enterprise partners are testing GPT-5 internally, sources claim that OpenAI is still training the upcoming LLM. This timeline will ultimately determine the model’s release date, as it must still go through safety testing, including red teaming. This is a cybersecurity process where OpenAI employees and other third parties attempt to infiltrate the technology under the guise of a bad actor to discover vulnerabilities before it launches to the public.

One of the most significant improvements expected with ChatGPT-5 is its enhanced ability to understand and maintain context over extended conversations. Ultimately, until OpenAI officially announces a release date for ChatGPT-5, we can only estimate when this new model will be made public. While the number of parameters in GPT-4 has not officially been released, estimates have ranged from 1.5 to 1.8 trillion. In theory, this additional training should grant GPT-5 better knowledge of complex or niche topics. It will hopefully also improve ChatGPT’s abilities in languages other than English.

As I mentioned earlier, GPT-4’s high cost has turned away many potential users. Once it becomes cheaper and more widely accessible, though, ChatGPT could become a lot more proficient at complex tasks like coding, translation, and research. It’s worth noting that existing language models already cost a lot of money to train and operate. Whenever GPT-5 does release, you will likely need to pay for a ChatGPT Plus or Copilot Pro subscription to access it at all. GPT-4’s impressive skillset and ability to mimic humans sparked fear in the tech community, prompting many to question the ethics and legality of it all.

Marc Benioff, co-founder and CEO of Salesforce, has some harsh criticism of Microsoft Copilot. The brand’s internal presentations also include a focus on unreleased GPT-5 features. One function is an AI agent that can execute tasks independent of human assistance. But with vibes, it’s hard to pin down what an LLM’s capabilities actually are. “It seems to ‘know more stuff’ than GPT-4, at least from my own initial impressions,” Willison said, basically thinking out loud.

This network of parameters, when likened to synapses between neurons in our own neural network we call “the brain”, become understandably exciting. Compared to its predecessor, GPT-5 will have more advanced reasoning capabilities, meaning it will be able to analyse more complex data sets and perform more sophisticated problem-solving. The reasoning will enable the AI system to take informed decisions by learning from new experiences. Finally, GPT-5’s release could mean that GPT-4 will become accessible and cheaper to use.

GPT-4 is now available to all ChatGPT Plus users for a monthly $20 charge, or they can access some of its capabilities for free in apps like Bing Chat or Petey for Apple Watch. Google is developing Bard, an alternative to ChatGPT that will be available in Google Search. Meanwhile, OpenAI has not stopped improving the ChatGPT chatbot, and it recently released the powerful GPT-4 update. ChatGPT is the hottest generative AI product out there, with companies scrambling to take advantage of the trendy new AI tech. Microsoft has direct access to OpenAI’s product thanks to a major investment, and it’s putting the tech into various services of its own. Remember, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has the likes of Google’s Bard chasing it down.

what is gpt5

This appends with our original thesis that OpenAI is likely to release an iterative GPT-4.5 model this year instead of upending the stakes altogether with GPT-5. None of this is confirmed, and OpenAI hasn’t made any official announcements about ChatGPT’s GPT-5 upgrade. The company told ArsTechnica it doesn’t have a comment on the Business Insider story. But a spokesperson offered a snippet from Sam Altman’s interview I mentioned before. The one where the CEO teases other releases before GPT-5 rolls along, if it’s even called that.

However, the quality of the information provided by the model can vary depending on the training data used, and also based on the model’s tendency to confabulate information. If GPT-5 can improve generalization (its ability to perform novel tasks) while also reducing what are commonly called “hallucinations” in the industry, it will likely represent a notable advancement for the firm. GPT, or generative pre-trained transformer, is the foundation of OpenAI’s chatbots, with each new version offering enhanced capabilities. GPT-4 has already demonstrated remarkable abilities in providing human-like responses, image recognition and speech generation.

Another employee said, “There’s no 4.5 and if there was it wouldn’t be released silently.” That was followed by the very impressive GPT-4o reveal which showed the model solving written equations and offering emotional, conversational responses. The demo was so impressive, in fact, that Google’s DeepMind got Project Astra to react to it. Back in May, Altman told a Stanford University lecture that “GPT-4 is the dumbest model any of you will ever have to use”, even going so far as to call the flagship LLM “mildly embarrassing at best”. GPT-5: everything we know so far about OpenAI’s next frontier model.

That stage alone could take months, it did with GPT-4 and so what is being suggested as a GPT-5 release this summer might actually be GPT-4.5 instead. After all there was a deleted blog post from ChatGPT App OpenAI referring to GPT-4.5-Turbo leaked to Bing earlier this year. This could include the video AI model Sora, which OpenAI CTO Mira Murati has said would come out before the end of this year.

Even with a free tier account, users will have access to the GPT-4o and GPT-40 mini models, though the number of queries that users can make of the larger model are limited. Upgrading to a paid subscription drastically increases that query limit, grants access to other generative AI tools like Dall-E image generation, and the ability to create custom GPTs. The company came under fire in September 2024 when news broke that OpenAI could raise subscription prices to more than $2000/month for access to future cutting-edge models. A lawsuit filed in June claims that OpenAI’s models were trained with “stolen” data.

Published

on
